About the Trail

This trail is a family favorite, as it is an easy path with little elevation and lots of nature. There are boardwalks across the wet meadow areas and pine needle-covered forested paths that are easy to navigate. Trail markers are easy to find and navigate.

Local History

The area’s history goes back to early colonial times, when the son of a first settler discovered limestone deposits in the area. Limestone provided much-needed construction material for mortar. The limestone quarry was later abandoned for better-quality limestone found in other locations. By the 1800s the area was overgrown and mistaken for natural rock formations and was aptly named the Devil’s Den

Traditionally, New England colonists named dangerous-looking places after the Devil, adding to its lore and legend. Of Note: across from the parking area (along the side of the road), look for the Devil’s Pulpit – a large elevated rock outcropping named for its resemblance to a preacher’s pulpit.
