Whether you are visiting the area or a resident, Atkinson Common is the perfect peaceful escape. This 21-acre park is more than just a place to walk through, it is part of Newburyport’s history. Featuring beautiful landscapes, a lily pond, historical monuments, and even public tennis courts – this is a local favorite.

Let’s Take a Walk

Walking paths in Atkinson Common are surrounded by tall pines, mature trees, and well-maintained gardens. Grab a coffee and the dog (on a leash) and enjoy the park’s beauty. This scenic area is popular with local photographers for family, wedding, and prom photos.

Local History

Atkinson Common was gifted to the city of Newburyport in 1873 by Eunice Atkinson Currier. Over time, the Belleville Improvement Society transformed what was once a field into a stunning park. The Civil War monument, honoring the 1,431 area soldiers and sailors who served, is centrally located in the Common.
