Parking
Downtown Newburyport has several area parking lots in addition to off-street parking. Take advantage of the parking lot and extend your trail walk with a treat from one of the many local shops and eateries.
Getting Started
Head to the water. It’s really quite simple. Newburyport is a beautiful, historical city, located along the Merrimack River. Walk in the direction of the river and you will find yourself on the Harbor Walk section of the Clipper City Rail Trail.
Head South
If you keep the river on your left, you will be heading South towards Joppa Park. Joppa Park is a favorite for kayakers, bird watchers, and offers the most comfortable benches overlooking the Merrimack River.
Along the Way
Along the way, you will see not one, but two lighthouses, sculptures, and interactive art. There is a variety of seating from swings to benches, and even hammocks. Take a moment to sit and pause, and enjoy the view! The trail is paved and accessible. You will likely be joined by walkers and joggers, strollers, bikes, and lots of dogs – this is a dog-friendly trail.
More Than A Trail
The Harborwalk in Newburyport is more than just a path or a trail, it is part of Newburyport’s maritime history. Sights include the US Coast Guard Station Merrimack River, adding to the area’s maritime history, along with the Newburyport Custom House Maritime Museum – you can’t miss it – this 6,500 pound anchor was salvaged from the wreck of the Sagamore, a four-masted schooner that sank in 1907 and is right on their lot.
