SUNFLOWER FIELDS ON
THE NORTH SHORE
Later summer in the Greater Newburyport area brings long-awaited blooms – fields of sunflowers. These vibrant fields are not only beautiful, they offer the perfect backdrop for photo taking, exploring nature, and a way to welcome the Fall season.
Colby Farm
50 Scotland Road, Newbury, MA
Cultivated by the Colby family, this is a true sunflower field experience that can be enjoyed by all ages. There is a ‘cash only’ fee for parking, which is well worth it, as there is no on-street parking available. The field will be in bloom in early September – check their website for opening day announcements and follow them on socials for photo inspiration.
School Street Sunflowers at Felix’s Farm
20 Lowes Lane, Ipswich, MA
Come explore the fields of sunflowers with the earliest fields blooming in August and continuous blooms through mid-September. The fields are open from 9 AM through sunset, admission is $10 weekdays for adults and $12 for weekends. Tickets are available here. Children under 4 years of age are free, and kids ages 4-17 are $5. In addition to sunflowers, you will see snapdragons, zinnias, dahlias, and more.
Tendercrop Farm
123 Dover Point Road, Dover, NH
Sunflower picking at the farm takes place September 13th and 14th from 10 am – 6 pm. Tickets are available for $10 per person, and children under 12 are free. Sunflowers are available for picking (bring your own clippers) for $1 a stem. Included in the admission fee is 5 acres of sunflowers that are perfect for taking family photos and entry to the corn maze, along with entertainment from local DJ Laura. There will also be food trucks and more on-site. Event information here.
What To Bring
Comfortable shoes – the ground may be uneven, and if it has rained, you may encounter some wet ground.
Hat and Sunglasses – being in a field means being fully exposed to the sun
Bug Spray – mosquito activity can be higher at dusk or in marshy areas
Water – stay hydrated while you explore the fields
Props – if you are capturing family photos, bring a blanket and a stool or chair for portrait taking.
Timing It
If you are looking for soft, warm light and shadows, taking pictures just after sunrise or before sunset will give you that golden hour glow. Midday will give you bright light that makes for bold images with high contrast.
