Getting Started
Fishing License – In the state of Massachusetts a salt water fishing license is required by anyone 16 years or older. If you are over the age of 60, the license is free, however you are still required to obtain one. Licenses are required for all salt water fishing: from the shoreline, a dock, jetty or boat. Licenses can be purchased for $10 online via MassFishHunt.com Note: If you are fishing on a for-hire vessel or charter boat, you are covered by their permit and do not need an individual licese.
Bait & Tackle – Surfland Bait and Tackle is located at 30 Plum Island Boulevard, Newbury – here you will find live eels, sandworms and all the lures and plugs your heart desires. For over 50 years the team at Surfland has provided expert advice, top rated brands and rod and reel repairs.
Gear – Pack a hat, sunscreen and bug spray and if you are night fishing a head lamp always helps. Have a copy of your fishing license on you and don’t forget to check the weather and your local tide chart.
Surfcasting Spots – This style of salt water fishing if popular along beaches and rocky shores – especially in and around Plum Island beaches. Using a long rod, a cast is thrown from land into the surf. Popular catches are bluefish, stripers and mackerel during the summer months.
Plum Island ‘The Point’ – located at the mouth of the Merrimack River this spot is a local favorite and offers paid parking.
Sandy Point State Reservation – located at the most southern tip of Plum Island, this location is great for high tide fishing. Parking is limited and payment or a seasonal pass is required to enter the Reservation.
