The Custom House Maritime Museum (CHMM), a Federal style building built in 1835 by renowned architect Samuel McIntire is located at 25 Water Street and welcomes visitors year-round to enjoy the area’s maritime history, traditions, collections and artifacts.

A Journey Through Time

The CHMM is home to seven galleries with collections that focus on periods of time from prehistory to the present. Included are the early settlers, the rise of trade, the Revolutionary war, the founding of the U.S. Coast Guard and much more.

Whether you are fascinated by lighthouses, intricate ship models, the legendary “Newburyport Clippers”, locally crafted sailing ships made famous for their speed and the role they played in Newburyport’s golden age of trade, or the rich history of the indigenous Pawtucket people that lived along the Merrimack (Molodemak in Abenaki) for thousands of years, the CHMM offers something for everyone to enjoy.
