Tips & Tricks for Campers

Camping in the Berkshires can be easy-going or as adventorous as you want it to be. Here are some pointers to make the most of your trip:

New Campers:

  • Start simple. Choose a campground with amenities like bathrooms, showers and potable water. Campgrounds such as Quinebaug Cove and Bonne Brae are great beginner-friendly spots.
  • Borrow before you buy. If you’re not sure camping will be a long-term hobby, borrow gear from friends or rent items from campgrounds before investing in a full setup.
  • Practice makes perfect. Try settling up your tent at home before heading out- you will thank yourself when daylight quickly fades in the woods!
  • Pack for comfort. A good sleeping bag/pad, warm layers, and bug spray can turn a rough night into a much more manageable one.

Experienced Campers:

  • Seek out the backcountry feel. Campgrounds like October Mountain, Pittsfield State Forest, and Savoy Mountain offer more rugged, secluded sites.
  • Challenge yourself. Try a longer hike, plan a multi-day loop around, or explore trails like those up Mount Greylock for breathtaking summit views.
  • Upgrade your camp kitchen. Go beyond hot dogs! Experiment with Dutch oven cooking, or pack lightweight gear for gourmet meals on the trail. If you are RV-ing, you will have more access to appliances, so pack accordingly.
  • Respect the land. As always, follow the “Leave No Trace” rules: pack out the trash, minimize the fire impact, and respect the wildlife- it is their home you’re visiting.
