ALL ABOUT MASS MOCA
The Berkshires in Massachusetts truly offer something for everyone, from rolling hills for nature lovers and local culinary crafts for foodies. For those who have an interest in the arts, whether it’s visual or musical, this gem in North Adams may be the perfect destination. When it comes to capturing the spirit of the region, there is nothing like MASS MoCA.
The Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art is more than just a museum – it’s also an opportunity for visitors to embrace their inner creativity and closely connect with their community. If you are a home buyer and exploring the Berkshires as a place to live, MASS MoCA is one of the shining examples of what makes this region so unique.
A Historic Space Transformed
While MASS MoCA officially opened in 1999, its history goes back much further. The building was once home to Arnold Print Works in 1860 and later Sprague Electric in 1942. When Sprague closed in 1985, the community didn’t want to abandon the building. Over the next decade, the space was beautifully restored into a contemporary art museum with over 200,000 square feet of gallery space – making it one of the largest centers for contemporary visual and performing arts in the country!
What You’ll Find Inside
The art collection at MASS MoCA is immersive, innovative, and simply incredible. The pieces are on a rotating schedule, so there is always something new to marvel at throughout the year. Some of the museum’s most notable pieces are Sol LeWitt’s A Wall Drawing Retrospective, James Turrell’s C.A.V.U., Anselm Kiefer’s The Women of the Revolution, and many more! There is also a wide variety of performing arts shows and sound experiences. Additionally, for visitors with children, they can visit Kidspace, a free, child-friendly gallery and studio that encourages young creativity. To sum it up, MASS MoCA has something exciting for all ages!
Music, Events & More
Aside from their art exhibits, MASS MoCA hosts several events year-round, with a heavy emphasis on musical arts. Throughout the year, the museum offers live concerts and festivals, film screenings, yoga classes, and community art projects! Some of their annual highlights include:
- Chalet Beer Garden Nights – Each summer, you can visit MASS MoCA’s free riverside beer garden and live performances under the stars. Running every Thursday evening throughout the season, the series features a vibrant lineup including DJs, drag shows, dance, staff performances, and community nights, offering unforgettable summer experiences.
- LOUD Weekend – The annual LOUD Weekend Music Festival offers a wide variety of adventurous music, all while exploring the museum exhibits, indoor and outdoor!
- And so much more!
