FROM PATCH TO PORCH:
PUMPKIN PICKING IN LITTLE RHODY

A Cozy Rhode Island Fall Tradition

Fall in Rhode Island is filled with many festive activities, pumpkin picking being one of the most beloved traditions. As the air turns crisp and the leaves start to glow with color, Rhode Islanders know it’s the perfect time to head to a local farm for some seasonal fun. Pumpkin picking offers more than just a chance to find the perfect gourd- it’s an opportunity to support local businesses and enjoy time outdoors before winter arrives. It’s the perfect weekend activity that captures the best of New England’s fall.

Why Pumpkin Picking Is a Rhode Island Fall Staple

Our fall season is a healthy mix of bright, sunny days and chilly, sweater-weather evenings; the perfect balance for outdoor adventures. September and October weekends can easily be filled with farm visits across the state, each offering its own touch of local charm.

Not only can you pick the perfect pumpkin, but many farms also offer hayrides, corn mazes, and farm stands stocked with fresh seasonal produce, baked goods, and pumpkin-spice-and-everything-nice treats.

Pumpkins themselves are full of possibilities. They make beautiful, natural decorations and can be carved into funny faces, spooky designs, or simple fall-themed patterns. Don’t toss those pumpkin “guts” too quickly! Roast the seeds for a crunchy homemade snack that tastes like autumn in every bite. If carving isn’t your thing, skip the mess and grab some paint instead! Painted pumpkins let your creativity shine while adding a unique personal touch to your fall décor.

Spotlight on 4 Town Farm

One of the most notable farms for such fun is Four Town Farm. This nearly 150-acre family-run farm filled with seasonal fun spans over the four towns of Seekonk and Swansea, Massachusetts, and East Providence and Barrington, Rhode Island, making it easily accessible to homeowners across the area.

This widespread land was purchased around 1900 by David Peck, and remains in the Peck family today, though through marriage, it’s now the Clegg family’s farm. In the 1970s, the family added a greenhouse business, eventually expanding to 23 greenhouses. Over five generations, the Cleggs have built Four Town Farm into a thriving, local landmark that continues to serve the community year after year.

Visitors can pick their own pumpkins, flowers, fruits, and vegetables, making it a one-stop destination for fresh, local produce and fall fun. The ingredients for your next farm-fresh meal, and your perfect pumpkin, are just minutes from the Rhode Island-Massachusetts border.
